Z-Morh Tunnel
The Z-Morh Tunnel, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 13, 2025, is a significant infrastructure project located in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. This 6.5 km long bi-directional tunnel connects Gagangir and Sonamarg, enhancing all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and the popular tourist destination of Sonamarg, which often experiences heavy snowfall that disrupts travel.
Key Features of the Z-Morh Tunnel
– Length and Structure: The tunnel measures 6.5 km and includes an additional 6.05 km of approach roads. It is designed to accommodate up to 1,000 vehicles per hour at a maximum speed of 80 km/h.
– Elevation: Situated at approximately 2,637 meters (8,652 feet) above sea level, the tunnel provides a crucial bypass of avalanche-prone areas on the Srinagar-Leh Highway (NH-1).
– Emergency Provisions: A parallel emergency escape tunnel, 7.5 meters wide, is integrated into the design for evacuation and potential railway use.
– Construction Method: The tunnel was constructed using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), suitable for challenging geological conditions.
Strategic Importance
The Z-Morh Tunnel plays a vital role in improving military logistics and civilian access to the Ladakh region. Alongside the ongoing construction of the Zojila Tunnel, which is expected to be completed by 2028, it will significantly reduce travel distance between Srinagar and Ladakh from 49 km to 43 km. This connectivity is essential for both defense operations and tourism.
Project Timeline and Cost
– Construction Start: The project commenced in May 2015 but faced delays due to financial issues with the original contractor.
– Completion: After several years of work, the tunnel was completed in late 2024.
– Cost: The total expenditure for the Z-Morh Tunnel is estimated at around ₹2,700 crore (approximately $325 million).
The Z-Morh Tunnel marks a significant advancement in infrastructure within Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring year-round access to Sonamarg and improving connectivity with Ladakh. This development not only facilitates civilian travel but also strengthens strategic military capabilities in the region, making it a crucial asset for both local residents and national defense.
